Kaplan University was originally established as the American Institute of Commerce in 1937. The name was later changed to Quest College and in November 2000 it was renamed Kaplan College after being taken over by Kaplan, Inc.
It became Kaplan University in September 2004 when they were approved to provide graduate-level degree courses. In October 2007, the seven Iowa and Nebraska-based Hamilton Colleges combined to become a part of the Kaplan University. Concord Law School also combined with Kaplan University to become the Concord Law School of Kaplan University.

Admissions Process
Some of the main aspects of the admissions process are:
- The students need to fill out the necessary admissions applications and submit it online.
- Potential students must take an interview.
- If you do not have an associate degree like you will need to take an entrance exam.
- Applications for credit for previous education, training, work experience (experiential learning), or CLEP must be completed before applying.
- All applicants must fill out an Enrollment Agreement

The basic requirements for admission for an online course with Kaplan University include the following:
- Be a high school graduate or have a General Education Diploma (GED) or have a Home Study certificate or transcript from a Home Study program that is comparable to high school level.
- The high school graduation certificate needs to be submitted with a certified copy of an original high school diploma, a copy of a high school transcript showing the date of high school graduation, a copy of a DD214 with date of high school graduation, a GED certificate or official notification that a GED has been earned, or a college transcript indicating the date of high school graduation.
